Project background and grid challenges
As the new power system is built out at pace, ground-mounted and complex-terrain PV plants built in earlier rounds face a double challenge: module power degradation and micro-cracks, together with difficulty meeting the active-support requirements of modern grids. A grid-scale centralized PV plant in Huidong, Guangdong, had operated reliably for years and urgently needed a step change in system performance without altering the existing mounting structure or the main electrical topology.
The SRAU solution and technical breakthroughs
Drawing on its SRAU (grid-adapted repowering module) product family, developed specifically for existing plants, NJITG-POWER tailored a complete in-situ, plug-and-play repowering package for the project:
- Mechanical and physical in-situ compatibility: SRAU modules precisely match legacy dimensions and mounting-hole positions, enabling direct replacement on the original racking with zero modification and a far shorter outage window.
- Precise electrical matching: operating voltage and string short-circuit current were calibrated to the existing combiner boxes and main transformer capacity, eliminating series-parallel mismatch and local overheating.
- Enhanced grid support: extremely low degradation and excellent PID resistance significantly improve power quality output and reactive response in hot, humid and harsh environments.
Demonstration results
After successful grid connection and acceptance, the plant's measured generation efficiency improved by more than 20%. O&M inspection frequency dropped sharply, and the project was recognized as a benchmark for repowering existing grid assets.
